Puerto Plata cruise - pretty beaches, a wide variety of water sports and more
Port infrastructure facilities have improved significantly in the past 5 years, following their lease by the government to private operators, and are adequate for cargo purposes, although inefficient customs procedures and high tariffs by regional standards pose a burden for businesses. The main cargo ports are Caucedo, Haina, Puerto Plata and Santo Domingo, in that order. Most containerized cargo is handled between the ports of Haina and Caucedo, with the latter also becoming an important transhipment port in the Caribbean. Caucedo is expanding its facilities to handle 2m twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU). Puerto Plata on the north coast receives mostly containerised cargo for the north of the country. The port of Santo Domingo mostly receives imports of new cars. The main destinations for cruise ships are La Romana, Samana and Santo Domingo. The port of La Romana, which is privately owned and operated, handles both cruise and cargo and is where most of the country's sugar is exported from. The Dominican government recently awarded the concession of the port of Santo Domingo to a private local group, which is making large investments in its terminal infrastructure as well as dredging in order to boost cruise arrivals. Samana Bay in the northeast part of the country is the second-most popular cruise destination, after la Romana, but ships have to anchor offshore, as there are no adequate berthing facilities.
